A bubble chart adds a third variable to an X-Y scatter by encoding it in the bubble area (or diameter), showing X, Y and Z in a single chart. It is commonly used to compare many categories on two metrics plus their scale, making multi-dimensional information readable in one view β a favorite for multi-dimensional benchmarking in management reporting.
Use it for supplier or product multi-dimensional evaluation such as quality-cost-volume, for Pareto-style focus management where a few key objects dominate, for showing scale differences across categories, and for multi-dimensional comparison in management reports. Color and labels can add further classification dimensions, which suits multi-dimensional management scenarios.
Enter the category, X, Y and Z (size) columns, and the tool maps bubble size by area proportionally, positions the bubbles on the X-Y plane, labels key objects and adds an AI interpretation. Objects in the upper-right with large bubbles are the best overall performers, making them easy to spot for benchmarking.
Size should be encoded by area, not diameter: area is proportional to the value, so the radius is proportional to βvalue β doubling the diameter would quadruple the area and visually mislead. Keep 10β30 bubbles; with more, apply labels or interactive filtering to avoid a crowded chart.
