What to Check on a Nutrition Label

GB 28050 requires declared values to be truthful and supported by test data; market supervision compares measured values with declared values through sampling, and exceeding the allowable tolerance means nonconformance. Declared values should be based on stable formulations and test data rather than filled in arbitrarily; regular checks identify and prevent label compliance risks early.

How Allowable Tolerances Are Defined

GB 28050 sets allowable tolerances for core nutrients: for may-exceed indicators such as protein, carbohydrate and dietary fiber, the measured value must not be lower than 80% of the declared value; for may-be-lower indicators such as energy, fat and sodium, the measured value must not exceed 120% of the declared value; vitamins and minerals follow specific multiples. The tool applies the corresponding tolerance rule automatically by nutrient category. How to Judge Compliance

Is it a problem if the measured value is much higher than declared?
It depends on the nutrient category: for fat, sodium and energy, a measured value above 120% of the declared value is noncompliant; for protein and carbohydrate, a measured value below 80% is noncompliant. The rather-lower-than-declared approach only applies to the may-be-lower indicators.
How is NRV% calculated?
NRV% = (measured or declared content divided by the corresponding nutrient reference value, NRV) x 100%, with energy in kJ. The tool has the NRV table built in and calculates it automatically.
Can declared values be changed at any time?
Changing declared values requires re-running stability and compliance validation and updating the label. Do not deliberately write low values (fat, sodium) or high values (protein) to avoid risk, because regulators verify against actual measurements.
