CQI-15 is the AIAG special process standard 'Welding System Assessment' covering resistance, arc and laser welding in the automotive supply chain. It evaluates personnel qualification, process parameters, base and filler material management, equipment capability, weld inspection and records to keep weld quality stable and controlled. Findings are compared with customer special requirements and closed out through the quality management system.
Use CQI-15 for audits of welding suppliers of automotive body, chassis and components, for internal welding-shop self-assessments, and for targeted investigation of weld defects such as porosity, cracks or lack of fusion. It also supports new-project welding process approval consistent with IATF 16949 requirements. Actual parameter monitoring curves should be archived for traceability and anomaly analysis, and material certificates with heat and lot numbers kept complete.
Assess welder qualifications and expiry dates, welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR), parameter monitoring (current, voltage, speed, force), base and filler material storage and traceability, equipment maintenance and electrode management, weld appearance and destructive testing, and error-proofing and traceability marking. Score each item as conforming, non-conforming or not applicable, with missing evidence judged non-conforming, and track corrective actions.
CQI-15 is a checklist-and-evidence assessment, not a calculation tool. Welder qualification is revalidated per standards such as ISO 9606, typically every two years, or sooner if welding is interrupted beyond the allowed period. Destructive test samples such as metallographic and tensile specimens should be numbered, retained and matched to batch records.
