NADCAP Special Processes: Audit Preparation and Self-Assessment
What Is NADCAP?
NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program) is administered by PRI in the United States and certifies special processes in the aerospace supply chain, covering heat treatment, chemical processing, non-destructive testing, welding, coating and more. NADCAP accreditation is a common requirement for becoming an approved supplier to aerospace primes, and audits are based on the AC7101 series checklists. In the preparation phase, self-assessment results can be used to build a gap list and gather evidence before applying for the formal audit.
What Do the Checklists Cover?
The tool generates self-assessment items based on the AC7101 elements: personnel qualification and training records, equipment calibration and maintenance, process parameter documents and work instructions, process control and monitoring, test specimens and witness pieces, records and traceability, and nonconformance handling. Different special processes (such as AC7102 heat treatment or AC7114 NDT) emphasize different points. Prepare a separate checklist and matching records for each special process in the accreditation scope to avoid cross-process omissions.

Gap analysis before the initial NADCAP accreditation application; self-assessment before surveillance or re-accreditation audits (typically on a 12-24 month cycle); supplier special-process audits; and preparation for second-party audits by primes. Record the clause number, problem description and evidence for each nonconformance, and close the findings with submitted verification material before the re-audit to form a complete loop.
Outputs and Precautions
The tool outputs a self-assessment checklist and an evidence list organized by checklist. Note that NADCAP audits are based on on-site evidence, so documents and records must be consistent with actual operations; auditors focus on personnel authorization, parameter records and equipment status. Findings from self-assessment should become a corrective-action plan closed before the audit. Consider building a special-process parameter database so historical records and trends can be retrieved quickly during the audit.
