TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) is a management system in which everyone participates in equipment care to maximize overall equipment effectiveness. Its eight pillars are autonomous maintenance, planned maintenance, focused improvement, education and training, early management, quality maintenance, office TPM and safety and environment. TPM targets zero breakdowns, zero defects and zero accidents, shifting equipment management from fix-when-broken to prevent-first, everyone-involved, and manages equipment across its whole life - from selection and installation to disposal.
The tool organizes the JIPM progression: initial cleaning (cleaning is inspection), countermeasures for contamination sources and hard-to-access areas, establishing cleaning/lubrication/inspection standards, general inspection training, autonomous inspection, standardization, and autonomous management. Each step describes the activities and outputs. Autonomous maintenance makes operators care for their own machines and is the foundation of TPM, complementing dedicated maintenance; drive it with an equipment register and lubrication charts so every machine has an owner, a standard and a record.
The tool provides daily inspection checklist templates (pre-shift, during operation, periodic) covering lubrication, fastening, cleaning, abnormal noise and temperature, with custom equipment support. Combined with Run@Rate or standalone OEE data, it computes overall equipment effectiveness (availability x performance x quality) and uses Pareto analysis to locate the six big losses (breakdowns, changeovers, adjustments, speed loss, idling, defects). When OEE is below 85%, fix the largest loss first so improvement resources go to the highest-return area.
Select key equipment, build the equipment register and inspection checklists, train operators in autonomous maintenance, progress through the seven steps, record downtime and loss data to compute OEE, and use Pareto and PM analysis (phenomenon, mechanism, cause, countermeasure) to eliminate chronic losses. Verify improvement with the trend of breakdown counts and MTBF - only data-proven improvement counts. Link with 5S (foundation), SMED (changeover loss) and VSM (equipment bottlenecks) to close the lean equipment-management loop.
